Constable to ACP, close to 13k police posts vacant in city: RTI

Times of India: Mumbai: Sunday, 21 Jan 2024.
City’s police force continues to remain depleted in comparison to its population and cops’ rising workload, especially during protests, political rallies, marches and processions. Response to a query filed under Right to Information (RTI) Act by activist Anil Galgali has revealed that there are 12,899 vacancies in Mumbai police, ranging from the post of constable to additional commissioner of police.
Galgali had sought information from the police commissioner’s office about current sanctioned posts, working posts and vacancies in Mumbai police. Assistant commissioner of police of Mumbai commissionerate Vinod Kamble shared the information till Nov 30, 2023. The total number of sanctioned posts is 51,308, including 38,409 working (filled) posts and 12,899 vacant.
Most vacancies are for police constables who are the backbone of the force manning one of the densely populated cities in the country. The department has 28,938 sanctioned constable posts, of which 17,823 are working and 11,115 are vacant. Besides, there are 3,543 sanctioned posts of sub-inspector of police, of which 2,318 posts are filled and 1,225 are vacant. Of the 1,090 sanctioned posts for police inspector, 313 are vacant and 977 filled. That apart, 29 of the 141 posts of assistant commissioner of police are vacant; 43 posts of deputy commissioner of police have been approved, of which 39 posts are filled. Meanwhile, just one of the 12 posts of additional police commissioner is vacant.
Galgali said while there is no change in sanctioned posts, the number of vacancies has been increasing every year due to retirement of cops.
He said if the number of sanctioned posts is increased while vacant posts are filled up, pressure on Mumbai police will reduce.
