Around 12,899 posts are vacant in the Mumbai police department, according to a reply recieved for a question sought to this effect under the Right to Information (RTI) Act.
According to the information given to the RTI activist Anil Galgali by Mumbai Police, it has been revealed that 12,899 posts for Additional Commissioner of Police to Constable are vacant.
RTI activist Anil Galgali had applied to the Police Commissioner's office seeking information about the current sanctioned posts, working posts, and vacancies in Mumbai Police department. Assistant Commissioner of Police Vinod Kamble informed Anil Galgali of current information up to November 30, 2023.
The total number of sanctioned posts is 51308. About 38409 posts have been filled and 12899 posts are vacant. Around 28938 posts of police constable are sanctioned. Out of these, 17823 posts are filled up and 11115 posts are vacant.
About 3543 posts of Sub Inspector of Police have been sanctioned, and 2318 posts are filled up and 1225 posts are vacant. Police Inspector has 1090 sanctioned posts, of which 313 are vacant and currently 977 personnel are working. 29 out of the 141 posts of Assistant Commissioner of Police are vacant. 43 posts for Deputy Commissioner of Police have been approved, and 39 posts are filled up. There are four posts vacant. Whereas, only 1 out of 12 posts of Upper Police Commissioner is vacant.
According to Anil Galgali, the sanctioned posts are from earlier and there is no change, but every year the number of vacancies is increasing due to retirement. He mentioned that if the number of sanctioned posts is increased while filling up the vacant posts, the pressure on the Mumbai Police will be reduced.
