The Gujarat government has taken stern action against those who misuse the Right to Information (RTI) Act in the state to extort money from people and has registered 67 offences in this regard, said Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghavi in Gujarat Assembly Tuesday. This is just the beginning and further stricter action will be taken against “such elements”, he added.
As per an official release from the state government, Sanghavi shared the details while making a statement on a matter of urgent attention raised by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislators Arvind Rana, Keyur Rokadiya, Uday Kangad and Alpesh Thakor.
Rana drew the attention of the Home Minister with reference to incidents that have come to light in Surat where money was allegedly extorted under the guise of RTI from some people associated with residential and other building construction work. Sanghavi said that Gujarat Police has succeeded in catching members of the “cheater gang”.
He said that the RTI Act has been in force with the objective of bringing awareness among the public, and to remove corruption and ensure transparency in the system. However, he added, Gujarat Police has taken stern action against those who misuse the act by registering 67 offences against them.
Speaking on the case of Surat, Sanghavi said that police had received representation that “some elements” were harassing people associated with the construction business by defaming them and extorting money from them under the guise of RTI applications.
