B B Nayak Excise Dept to probe into liquor shop violations at Panvel resi complex, Govt directive after CM responds to women's concerns B B Nayak Navi Mumbai: The excise department is set to investigate the alleged violations by a proposed liquor shop at a housing society in Panvel, following Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's response to complaints from Alert Citizens Team (ACT) and local residents. The residents have raised concerns over potential nuisance and women's safety and security issues arising from the liquor shop, which is located at the main entrance of the housing society. The society also staged a human chain protest, led by the women residents. The proposed liquor shop is situated at Enkay Heritage cooperative housing society, just 19 metres from the compound wall of the famous Sai Baba temple at Panvel and 140 metres from the main temple structure, according to advocate Jaysing Jagannath Shere, who represented the issue to the Raigad district collector on behalf of the society. "We are deeply concerned, particularly in view of the rising crimes against women and girls, which is why we protest against the liquor shop," said an elderly woman from the society. ACT has pointed out that consumers often buy liquor from wine shops and consume it outside the shop, with some of them passing inappropriate remarks against women and girls. The housing complex also has several other shops, such as grocery stores, which are frequented by women, and the presence of drunkards can create problems, according to Naresh Gaikwad, an office bearer of the society. Following the protest, over 50 women wrote a petition to the Chief Minister seeking his intervention. ACT convenor B N Kumar followed up on the matter through the Right to Information (RTI) Act route, seeking progress after the CM's mail. The state excise department has directed its Raigad district superintendent to conduct a detailed study and report, as stated in a letter signed by L G Thasale, additional public information officer. Adv Shere said he will now follow up with both the Raigad district excise department and the collector to ensure that nuisance is not allowed at their doorstep. An excise officer mentioned that residents have been called for a hearing.
