RTI activist attacked by goons for exposing irregularities in MGNREGS works in Odisha’s Mayurbhanja

Human Right and Right to Information (RTI) organisations showed concerns over growing attack on  RTI and HR activists in the state. They have drawn attention of the authorities on the recent attack on an RTI activist at Jashipur Block in Mayurbhanja District and demanded immediate action against the culprits.
In a press release a National Human Right Organisation Human Right Defender(HRD) has informed that the physical assault on RTI activist and human rights defender Mr. Pankaj Kumar Singh by contractors and other anti social elements in Jashipur Block of Mayurbhanj district of Odisha.
In written a letter to national human right commission, state human right commission and other authorities on the issue  HRD said, “Pankaj has been targeted for filing RTI queries to expose irregularities and corrupt practices used by administration in the allocation and use of funds meant for development works in the area.”
According to the sources, Mr. Pankaj Kumar Singh had exposed irregularities in the use of funds in a road construction work from N.H.49 to Dharasahi under MGNREGA scheme in 2014. On his exposure the administration also ordered to recover a huge amount of money to the tune of Rupees three lakhs from the contractors. He has also brought to lime light the irregularities in road construction work undertaken in other gram panchayats.  The local contractors had been targeting him since for the last few months.
