The Kerala
chapter of the National Campaign for People’s Right to Information (NCPRI) has
written to Governor P Sathasivam, alleging that the appointment of Information
Commissioners and the Chief Information Commission (CIC) were made merely on
political considerations and in ‘wilful violation’ of the RTI Act.
Former
Vigilance Director Vinson M Paul’s name was recommended for the post of CIC,
and the government forwarded the names for LIC development officer Ankathil
Ajayakumar; Adv Aby Kuriakose of Chengannur; retired teacher Abdul Majeed of
Malappuram; government pleader Roycee Chirayil and Viswakarma Sabha leader and
former PSC member P R Devadas for the post of Information Officer.
“All of them,
except Vinson M Paul, are political appointments. Ajayakumar is nominee of the
JD(U). Devadas is nominee of Viswakarma, another UDF constituent, while Abdul
Majeed is a KPCC secretary,” said NCPRI
member M T Thomas. Thomas said
that as per a SC judgment, the number of names proposed should be three times
the number of vacancies. However, the government submitted names of only six
persons to the Governor.
