After over
six years of construction and an additional expenditure of Rs19 crore, the
iconic head office of Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA)
is far from being complete. The latest deadline, June end, has also swooshed
by.
The proposal
for a new building for the authority was approved on December 24, 2007. The
building was to be constructed behind the existing headquarters at the
Bandra-Kurla Complex, at an estimated cost of Rs87 crore. The work is still on
with at least a couple of more months before the inauguration.
This
information was revealed after one Anil Galgali filed an application under the
Right to Information (RTI) Act. "The project was given three extensions –
first till September 15, 2013, second till December 31, 2014 and the latest one
till May 31, 2015. The work is still incomplete and the cost has gone up by
Rs19 crore, as the project could not be completed within the stipulated time
frame," said Galgali.
The swanky
government office building, spread over 4,904 sqm of area, will have nine
floors for the staffers and another two for the service areas. The existing
office will be operational as well and some of the employees will operate from
the old premises.
