Times
of India: Gurgaon: Thursday, 19 February 2015.
For over four
years now, HUDA has not undertaken the routine cleaning of several overhead and
underground drinking water reservoirs in various sectors, an RTI has revealed.
The RTI was
filed by activist Aseem Takyar. The reply by HUDA's division-II, received on
February 12, revealed water tanks in sectors 21, 22, 23 and 23A, have not been
cleaned since 2011. They are normally expected to be cleaned once every year.
Besides, an overhead tank in Sector 18, underground water storage tanks in
sectors 3, 5, 6, 12, 12A, 21, 22, 23, 23A and Electronics City have not been
maintained or cleaned since mid-2013.
A response to
another RTI query, sought by Takyar last month, regarding the status of
maintenance of water tanks in HUDA's division-IV that supply drinking water to
sectors 33, 34,38 and 47, revealed the same lax approach of HUDA. According to
the response submitted by the executive engineer, underground tanks in sectors
33 and 34 were last cleaned in 2013, and a tender is yet to be allotted for
fresh cleaning work. The conditions of underground water tanks in sectors 38
and 47 are much the same. Maintenance works were last done on them in 2013,
when contractors were paid Rs 69,300 and Rs 1,45,074 respectively.
HUDA
administrator Anita Yadav said, "I am aware of the situation. We are
currently preparing a status report of the maintenance of these tanks. As soon
as it is ready, necessary action, including floating fresh tenders for their
cleaning, will be taken."
