Expressing
shock over the large number of bogus voter cards in Delhi, the Central
Information Commission has recommended an inquiry into the matter. The Delhi
government recently admitted that there were 58,000 voter cards with wrong
photos besides other anomalies like fake residential addresses.
In the
context of admission of mistakes and huge number of bogus voter cards by the
city's chief electoral officer in a PIL before the Delhi high court,
information commissioner Sridhar Acharyulu said the problem appeared to be
serious and complex. "It is shocking to know that there are 58,000 cases
of wrong photo image, including that of a filmstar on a common man's voter
card. An in-depth inquiry into residential addresses with MP recommendation
criterion might reveal more bogus votes."
Acharyulu
said as there was a possibility of correction in the voters' list, CIC would
recommend the SDM (elections) to examine the issue. The order was in response to
an RTI petition on the list filed by lawyer Anil Sood.
