Indian Express: Ludhiana: Friday, March 07, 2014.
When the Punjab government started dairy sciences
and fisheries colleges at GADVASU, amidst much fanfare in 2008, students were
promised jobs at the state-run MILKFED and the fisheries department.
Three years on, however, more than 100 students of
these colleges remain unemployed despite MILKFED yet to fill up 3,323 vacant
posts. Students say that authorities at the Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and
Animal Sciences University (GADVASU) in Ludhiana have also not made any efforts
to get them any kind of employment.
On Wednesday, these students after wait of two
years came out in the open against GADVASU and the state government demanding
that the promises be fulfilled.
The students from the Fisheries College had met
Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Minister Gulzar Singh Ranike a few days back
demanding jobs in fisheries department but say they received a shocking reply.
“The minister was not even aware that the college
exists; we feel cheated. When the college was started in 2008, we were told
about the excellent scope of this 4-year degree in fisheries and jobs in
state-run fisheries department.
Today its been more than 2 years that 2 batches
have passed out and we are unemployed,” said a graduate of the four-year
Bachelors degree in Fisheries Sciences.
It’s a similar story for more than 90 students of
Bachelors in Dairy Sciences and Technology course, who had been lured with the
promise of jobs in MILKFED. “We were told that Verka needs skilled labor. Now,
neither Verka nor any other company has been called for placement,” said a
student.
“We have done a fouryear degree and as per MILKFED
qualification rules, a student with a one-year diploma in dairy sciences is
equally qualified for the posts. Before admission we were told that students
with degrees will be given preference.
As per RTI information, more than 3,000 posts are
lying vacant in MILKFED but we are not being recruited,” added a student from
the dairy sciences college.
Till a few months back, the degree of fisheries
sciences being offered by GADVASU was not even recognised by the state’s
fisheries department, says Asha Dhawan, dean, College Of Fisheries.
“We have got the degree registered and hopefully
from next time students will be eligible for the jobs in fisheries department,” she added.
Dr S P S Sangha, dean at the College of Dairy
Sciences and Technology, said GADVASU is helpless as MILKFED has not kept its
promise.
“Firstly, they have downplayed the degrees of our
students by placing them at par with diploma holders from IGNOU.
Secondly, they are not even filling their vacant
posts while in 2008 when college started they promised that our students will
be given priority.
We are helpless,” he told The Indian Express.
