A group of
right to information (RTI) activists have organised a seminar on the right to
information act on October 6.
"It has
been eight years since implementation of the right to information act. A lot of
awareness has taken place about the act since its implementation. But many
people are still not able to use the act properly," said a statement
issued by the Sajag Nagarik Manch, a citizens' group.
The statement
added that the seminar aimed to provide answers to the queries of the citizens
regarding filing RTI application, getting the information under the RTI and
dealing with appellate authorities. The seminar will take place at IMDR, BMCC
road, Shivajinagar at 5pm.
RTI mandates
timely response to citizen requests for government information. The union
government had passed the act in 2005. It has replaced the old Freedom of
Information act 2002.
The
government has also started portal for the citizens to give proper information
about the act. It is an initiative taken by Department of Personnel and
Training, Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions. This RTI
portal gateway provides citizens the options for quick search of information on
the details of first appellate authorities and public information officers
(PIOs). The portal also gives access to RTI related information / disclosures
published on the web by various public authorities under the government of
state as well as union governments. Information about the portal will be given
to the citizens, the statement said.
