The water
supply department of the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) will be
implementing a pre-paid card system to keep accurate record of the quantum of
water supplied to tanker operators.
The move
follows demands by civic activists that the corporation should have accurate
records of water supplied from the PCMC storage reservoirs to the tanker
operators. Some activists had suggested that water meters be installed at each
reservoir to keep track of water supply. The corporation had also appointed
contractors, who would provide water by tankers to areas with inadequate
supply.
Executive
engineer of the water supply department, Sharad Jadhav, said, "The tanker
operators will be provided with pre-paid cards up to a certain amount. They
will be asked to swipe at the storage reservoirs to fill tankers. The
corporation will install reading devices at every filling reservoir. Once they
have swiped, the amount will be deducted from the card and the operator will be
provided a receipt." A new card will be issued once the amount in the old
card is exhausted, he added.
Raju Savale,
vice-president of the Pimpri-Chinchwad unit of the MNS, said that the
corporation spent Rs 1.16 crore in the last two years for providing water by
tankers. Savale received the information from the corporation through an RTI
query.
According to
the RTI information, of the Rs 1.16 crore paid to contractors by the PCMC, the
highest expenditure of Rs 99.99 lakh was incurred for zone D (Sangvi, Pimple
Gurav, Wakad and other areas). The lowest amount of Rs 3.6 lakh was spent for
zone C (Kasarwadi, Bhosari, Moshi and other areas). In zone A (Nigdi, Akurdi,
Chinchwad and other areas) the amount spent by the corporation was Rs 4.23
lakh, while in zone B (Pimpri, Chinchwad, Ravet, Kiwale and other areas) the
amount spent was Rs 9.09 lakh.
