The Hindu: Puducherry: Monday, 13th October
2025.
Member of Parliament and
Puducherry Pradesh Congress Committee president V. Vaithilingam on Sunday
alleged that the NDA Government led by Prime Minister Narendra Mod had been
consistently eroding and undermining transparency under the RTI Act since 2014.
Speaking to reporters here, he said the NDA government had weakened the RTI since it came to power. The Central Information Commission has been functioning without a Chief Information Commissioner and several key posts have been left vacant.
Out of 29 States, the posts of State Information Commissioners in seven States have been left vacant. The backlog has also been mounting with over 4 lakh cases pending at the State level while over 23,000 cases are pending at the appellate level, he said.
Mr. Vaithilingam also alleged irregularities in the implementation of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme in the Union Territory. Referring to the police attack on students of Pondicherry University, he said the university administration had called the police. Accusing the administration and the Puducherry Government of protecting the faculty member, he said the faculty was merely transferred and no action was taken against him.
