An RTI query has revealed a severe staff crunch at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, with nearly 100 top-level Group A non-faculty posts lying vacant
According to the information furnished under the RTI Act, 2005, PGIMER currently faces more than 90 vacancies in Group A non-faculty posts. These include crucial supervisory and academic positions such as principals, lecturers in nursing, lecturers in medical technology and radiology, administrative officers, medical physicists, dieticians and security officers. Spread across multiple departments, these unfilled posts have raised serious concerns about administration, supervision and the quality of medical education at the premier institute.
In several cases, the vacancies persist because no eligible officers are available in feeder cadres, recruitment rules are under litigation, or advertisements have failed to draw applicants.
Ashwani Munjal, the RTI applicant and chairman of the Joint Action Committee of the Contract Workers’ Union, expressed concern over the findings. He said, “These top-level officers are responsible for controlling and supervising thousands of Group B staff and for ensuring discipline, administration and teaching standards across the institute. One can imagine the plight of discipline, educational standards and quality in the absence of nearly 100 top-level Group A non-faculty and teaching posts. The acting or officiating arrangements have plagued the institute with indiscipline and sycophants.”
Despite repeated demands from staff and applicants, recruitment has been delayed for years, with many posts continuing under ad hoc or officiating arrangements.
