The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has formally raised concerns over the ongoing vacancy of the position of Chairperson of the Right to Information (RTI) Commission, emphasising the critical nature of this role for the functioning of the Commission and the upholding of citizens’ rights.
In a letter addressed to the Constitutional Council, the BASL highlighted that since the resignation of Retired Supreme Court Judge Upali Abeyratne on March 9, 2025, no appointment has been made to fill the post. The Chairperson’s role, as outlined in the Right to Information Act No. 12 of 2016, is pivotal to the Commission’s effective operation and its mandate to safeguard the public’s right to access information.
