RTI data reveals lack of quality check on cooking oil

Times of India: Ahmedabad: Saturday, 1 February 2025.
There were only 16 instances in the last seven years where total polar compounds (TPC) in cooking oil were found to be more than the prescribed level of 25%. This was revealed from the data obtained under the Right to Information (RTI) Act from the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC).
The RTI data from Jan 1, 2018, to Dec 31, 2024, showed that the food department of AMC conducted 3,091 tests to assess TPC levels in the city, of which only 16 exceeded the required level. The RTI disclosure revealed that in 10 instances where high TPC levels were detected, authorities disposed of the oil, while in six cases, the units were sealed.
Jamalpur-based advocate Atik Saiyed, who filed the RTI application, said that TPC levels were not regularly monitored in establishments reusing cooking oil, which posed a risk to public health.
Saiyed additionally pointed out that the consumption of food prepared in oil with elevated TPC can be detrimental to health, potentially causing various physical ailments.
The testing data showed that in 2022, out of 296 tests, TPC was elevated in four cases. In 2023, 7 out of 1,117 tests showed high levels, while in 2024, 5 out of 1,678 tests exceeded the limits.
