RTI activist reveals Rs 24.8 Cr expenditure on 2023 winter session

Times of India: Hubballi: Saturday, 7 December 2024.
Belagavi: Bhimappa Gadad, an RTI activist, expressed displeasure that a total of 24.8 crore rupees was spent on the 10-day session at Suvarna Vidhana Soudha (SVS) in December 2023. Despite spending lavishly on the session every year, there was no discussion on development in the House.
Speaking to the media at Kannada Sahitya Bhavan on here Friday, Bhimappa said the govt is spending a lot of money to provide transport, accommodation, food, and other facilities to the people's representatives during the session. Despite getting all these facilities, they are not attending the sessions as expected. Govt money is being wasted in the name of the session, he alleged.
Out of the Rs 24.8 crore money spent on the session, rooms were booked in 86 hotels for Rs 6.8 crore to accommodate dignitaries, ministers, MLAs, and officials. Rs 15.8 lakh was spent for the dinner of 239 officers of the assembly, Rs 82.9 lakh for 71 officers of the secretariat, and Rs 38.1 lakh for the travel of 63 members of the legislative council. Rs 27.8 lakh was spent on breakfast and dinner for 450 media persons at Keerti Hotel in Belagavi. A company that supplied juice to schoolchildren who came to watch the session was paid Rs 4 lakh. Rs 36 lakh was spent on the construction of 100 temporary toilets for police officers and personnel. Rs 69.4 lakh was paid for CCTV cameras and other accessories. Apart from this, Rs 7.3 crore was shown for the expenditure by the police department and Rs 5.7 crore by the PWD.
"North Karnataka has not seen progress, while the officials and people's representatives who are wasting public tax money in the name of the session are profiting. Govt money was wasted in the name of the session," he said.
