Police did not conduct probe, says RTI reply

Times of India: Trivandrum: Saturday, 21 September 2024.
The police have not conducted an investigation into the disruption of the Thrissur Pooram, that is believed to have an impact on the results of the Lok Sabha election results in Thrissur, a reply under the Right to Information Act said. This reply from the police is contradictory to the CM's statement which had stated that an inquiry would be conducted into the incident. However, according to the police, neither an investigation has been carried out, nor has a report been submitted.
There were allegations that the Pooram, conducted immediately before the last Lok Sabha elections, was disrupted due to police action. Following this, on April 21, the CM's office issued a press release stating that the state police chief would investigate the complaints and submit a report within a week. The chief minister later reiterated in a press conference that the incident would be thoroughly examined and that the complaints were being taken seriously. However, both the Thrissur city police and the police headquarters have responded in a reply to questions furnished under the RTI Act that no such investigation has taken place.
CPI state secretary Binoy Viswom had demanded a probe to determine if there was any conspiracy behind the Pooram disruption, and LDF candidate from Thrissur, VS Sunil Kumar, had called for the police report related to the Pooram to be released. The responsibility for the investigation was given to ADGP M R Ajith Kumar, who has been accused of meeting RSS leaders. The reply from the police raises questions about what happened to the investigation announced by the CM. The reply also lends more credibility to the argument that the CPM misled its ally CPI in this regard.
