Former Goa IB chief takes over as RTI commissioner of state

A former Intelligence Bureau (IB) chief of Goa, Aravind Kumar Nair, on Tuesday took over as the chief information commissioner (CIC) of the state. Nair said his priority would be on ‘EEE’ ‘educating’ people on the Right to Information (RTI) Act, ‘empowering’ people with RTI, and ‘ensuring’ the effective implementation of the act.
Till March 2024, over 200 appeals were pending with the Goa State Information Commission.
Governor P S Sreedharan Pillai administered the oath of office to Nair at Durbar Hall, Raj Bhavan, Dona Paula. Speaking to TOI, Nair said his focus would be on disposing of the pending and new cases as soon as possible.
Additionally, the former officer on special duty (OSD) to chief minister Pramod Sawant, Atmaram Barve, was sworn in as the State Information Commissioner (SIC). Sawant was also present for the function.
The three-year terms of Vishwas Satarkar as the CIC and Sanjay Dhavlikar as the SIC ended on March 1, 2024, and since then both posts have been vacant. Once the office starts functioning, more appeals are expected to be filed with the commission.
Nair, a native of Kollam town in Kerala, served in the IB for 36 years. Nair was posted to Goa in 2004 and retired in 2022 in the state. He served as the IB chief of Goa from 2009 till his retirement.
From 2012 to 2017, Nair also held the additional charge of chief information officer, Goa. He has degrees in economics, police administration, public administration, law, journalism, and mass communication.
The Union home ministry has conferred all the major awards on Nair. Besides, he is the recipient of the President’s Police Medal for Meritorious Service and the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service.
