Times of India: Nagpur: Friday, 12 July 2024.
A Right to Information (RTI) query has revealed that 131 consequential train accidents were reported across the country in the last three years. This means that on an average two passenger trains and one goods train have derailed every month from July 7, 2021 to June 17, 2024.
The information was received under the RTI Act by activist Ajay Bose. Out of 131 consequential train accidents, 92 were derailments. In these derailments, 64 were mail/express trains carrying passengers while 28 were goods trains. “The number of accidents shows that two passenger trains and one goods train derailed every month,” Bose said.
The RTI activist said the Indian Railways claims the safety of train movement is its top priority, but several accidents prove it otherwise. “It is important to improve the safety standard of the train operations. The railways introduced ‘kavach’ technology to prevent collision of trains, but the installation progress of the same is slow,” he said.
Another RTI query by Bose on kavach revealed that the system has been installed on 1,455km routes of only the South Central Railway (SCR).
The RTI reply revealed that the technology has been sanctioned on 36,545km routes of the Indian Railways across the country. In 2023-24, Indian Railways allocated ₹710 crore to install the kavach system.
