Sikkim Information Commission (SIC) conducted five day sensitization programme on the RTI Act, 2005

The Right to Information Act was enacted in 2005 to make governance more transparent and accountable. Both Central and State Governments are obligated to create awareness about the provision of the Act. State Information Commission (SIC) a statutory body, is entrusted with the crucial responsibility of upholding the Right to Information (RTI) Act of 2005 and stands as a beacon of transparency and accountability in the governance framework of India. State Information Commission also has the responsibility to conduct mass awareness campaigns and education initiatives, which are needed to create awareness about the RTI Act.
The Sikkim Information Commission (SIC) conducted 5 ( five) a day marathon sensitization programme on the Right to Information Act, 2005, targeting the grassroots level functionaries across various districts of the State from 2nd July to 6th July 2024.
The programme kicked off at Block Administrative Centre, Kabi, Mangan District on 2nd July 2024. The second-day programme was conducted in the multi-purpose hall, in the office of the Additional District Collector (Dev), Pakyong, Pakyong District, followed by the third-day programme at Block Administrative Centre, Duga, Pakyong District on the 3rd & 4th July respectively. The fourth day programme was held at Block Administrative Centre, Temi, Namchi District on 5th July and the final day programme concluded at the State Institute of Rural Development, Karfectar, for the participants from Gyalshing and Soreng Districts on 6th July 2024.
The programme was attended by the officials of the respective Block Administrative Centres, members of the Gram and Zilla Panchayats of the respective Block Administrative Centres, functionaries of the Gram Panchayats, local NGOs and Community-Based Organizations.
Smt. Tshering Choden Bhutia, Law Officer, Sikkim Information Commission, who was the resource person of the programme, sensitized the participants on the importance and the benefits of the Act. She also enlightened the public, that the Act promotes transparency and accountability in the working of the government. It also helps in containing corruption and working for the betterment of the public. The importance of the time frame in receiving a reply to the information under the RTI, Act i.e.30 (thirty) days from the receipt of the application was highlighted,
The programme also included an interactive session with the participants wherein the advantages and the disadvantages of the Right to Information Act were highlighted. Multiple Choice Questions with Answers on the Right to Information Act were given to the participant to assess their knowledge of the Act.
Smt Tshering Choden, also informed the participants that Sikkim Information Commission has started e-filing of Second Appeal application with video conferencing mode facility wherein the petition can be heard since 31st December 2023.
