Indian Express: Bengaluru: Saturday, 15 June 2024.
A group of advocates and human rights activists recently filed three RTI (Right to Information) applications seeking CCTV footage of Annapoorneshwari Nagar police station in Bengaluru over alleged special treatment given to actor and murder accused Darshan Thoogudeepa.
The speculations over special treatment grew after the police enforced Section 144 around the station and covered the police station with shamyana (ceremonial tent), citing security reasons.
Human rights activist Narasimha Murthy, and advocates Umapathi, Sudha Katwa, and Akhil Babu sought copies of CCTV footage of all the cameras maintained by the police station from June 6 to date. They have also sought the number of CCTV cameras installed and their locations and the date of installation, arrangements made for backup, and the total cost incurred for installation with proof of payment made towards such cost.
Katwa in her application sought the certified copy of the order or instructions for covering the entire station with a shamyana and details of its cost. In addition, she sought a copy of the order for placing barricades near the station. The application also sought a certified copy of the Section 144 order and the list of actions initiated by the station in pursuance of the order.
Speaking to indianexpress.com, Murthy said, “Reports have emerged of serving biryani, and giving mobile phones and cigarettes to the accused, triggering speculations that special treatment is being meted out to Darshan and his associates during the investigation of the murder case. Moreover, Section 144 is enforced, making it difficult for the public to enter the police station to file complaints, and seek passport verification, among others.”
He added that the station house officer has received the applications and assured them about providing the information at the earliest.
Thoogudeepa was Tuesday arrested for allegedly murdering one Renukaswamy.
