Tamil Nadu State Information Commission has fined a regional transport office superintendent 20,000 for refusing information to an RTI applicant. It also ordered departmental action against a motor vehicle inspector for making a false submission.
Chief information commissioner Shakeel Akhter instructed the transport commissionerate to submit a report within a month on action initiated against G Kumar, motor vehicle inspector of Puliyarai checkpost under Tenkasi RTO, for trying to mislead the commission. He had told the commission that police had registered a case against RTI applicant Muralidharan of Madurai for stealing documents from Tirumangalam office of RTO. However, the commission found the original complaint was not about theft of documents.
Also, superintendent Gopirajan of Tirumangalam RTO section office had refused to answer an RTI query saying a police investigation is underway in the matter and sharing information would impede it. However, the commission found police have only issued an acknowledgement (CSR) on the complaint. So, Gopirajan was fined 20,000, which he should deposit with the govt and submit the record to the commission.
Murualidharan had filed an RTI application in 2021 before Madurai South RTO seeking names and designations of officers at Tirumangalam unit office, apart from details of applications for change of address for vehicles from 2010 to 2021, and a memo issued in 2020.
