Power cuts in Mohali: PSPCL helpline number of no help, deputy mayor files RTI application

Indian Express: Mohali: Friday, 14 June 2024.
Residents of Mohali district are facing long power cuts. In many areas, especially in rural belts, people have to face three-four-hour power cuts. The areas in Zirakpur, Kharar and New Chandigarh are among the worst hit. Many residents complain that the helpline number of the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) also becomes unresponsive when they call to know the status of the power supply.
Mohali Deputy Mayor Kuljeet Singh Bedi said that he had filed an application under the Right to Information (RTI) Act to seek the information of the staff strength the PSPCL has.
“It has become routine that the people are forced to witness unscheduled power cuts. I sought information about the staff and about the load. I also sought information about the power demand and supply,” Bedi added.
In Zirakpur, Baltana and Dhakoli area are among the worst-hit areas where unscheduled power cuts have become a routine. Parul Sharma, a Zirakpur resident, said that they face frequent power cuts in their area and when they complain on the helpline numbers, they do not get any satisfactory answer.
“Whenever we call, we are told that maintenance is going on. It is a routine,” she rued. Hitesh Kaushal, another Zirakpur resident, said that the paddy season had started and the residents would face more problems. He added that already there are power cuts averaging three-four hours per day.
Arun Kumar, a resident of Gulmohar City in Kharar, said: “Almost every day there are three-to-four power cuts during the night. But we get a casual reply that maintenance is going on.”
Executive Engineer (XEN), PSPSL, Mohali, Taranjeet Singh told The Indian Express that they have proper supply and there is no shortage of power.
“The cuts could be due to maintenance or breakdown but there is no shortage of power supply. There is no gap in demand and supply,” XEN Singh added. Asked if there was any issue of overloading, XEN Singh said that it could be at a smaller level but they do not have any issues.
“It could be at a smaller level like sometimes a transformer breaks down but we don’t have a major issue of overloading,” XEN Singh added.
