The top-notch institutes of the country called IITs known for their innovative teaching and high scale placement rates are struggling these days to get their hundreds of students placed. In this placement session, around 38% IITians across all 23 campuses are yet to be placed, showing a response to a RTI application filed by IIT Kanpur alumnus Dheeraj Singh.
In his LinkedIn post, Singh shared placement statistics from previous years, citing RTIs as the source of the information. According to these figures, in 2024, 21500 students registered for the placements in IITs of which 38% students are yet to be placed which amounts to a staggering 8,000 individuals. This number of unplaced students is more than double the 3,400 (19%) students who were unplaced two years ago.
In 2023, almost 20,000 students were registered for placements of which 15,830 students were placed and remaining 4,170 were unplaced that account for 21% of total. As per the reports, the average CTC in 2023 was around Rs 17 lakh.
In 2022, a total of 17,900 students registered for placement, with 14,490 successfully securing positions, leaving 3,410 students unplaced, which accounts for 19% of the total. The median CTC for those placed was 17.2 LPA.
IIT Delhi has reached out to its alumni, seeking assistance in placing the current batch or recommending graduates to firms looking to hire engineers. Similarly, IIT Bombay and Birla Institute of Technology and Science have also contacted their alumni for support.
As the placement session for the academic year 2023-24 at IIT Delhi draws to a close, approximately 400 students still remain unplaced despite our best efforts. We are appealing to our esteemed alumni network for help in providing job opportunities for these graduating students.
Birla Institute of Technology and Science initiated contact with its alumni two months ago, and many other institutes have followed suit, some informally and others more publicly.
IIT-Bombay also reached out to former students for assistance. While placements are still on and will go on till June end, about 10% of the batch or 250 candidates who are participating in placements are yet to find a job. According to an RTI by Singh, last year, 329 candidates were not placed and 171 of them from the class of 2022 failed to find a job.
