Mapusa RTI activist Shetye signs undertaking pledging non-interference in fisherwomen's business

Herald Goa: Mapusa: Thursday, 11 April 2024.
With regards to the case filed by the Mapusa fisherwomen against Mapusa-based RTI activist Jawahar Shetye, Shetye on Wednesday signed an undertaking at Mapusa Police station, saying he won’t interfere in the fisherwomen’s business henceforth. This issue was escalated when 5 fisherwomen alleged that Shetye had extorted money and documents promising them to give a permanent and dedicated place to sell their fish in the fish market.
The issue came to light on Sunday, 7th April when the five fisherwomen raised their voice  and filed complaint against Shetye alleging that he approached them for money and document extortion at Mapusa fish market. The women said that he is harassing us because we are not Goans are native of Maharashtra. The fisherwomen also filed a police complaint against Shetye for disturbing the Mapusa market’s peace.
Activist Shetye was summoned on Wednesday for interrogation. In order to maintain peace, the Mapusa Police urged Shetye to sign an undertaking that he will not interfere in the fisherwomen’s business and peace will be maintained; to which he agreed.
The fisherwomen claim that a sum of 5000 rupees was extorted from each of the 5 fisherwomen. However, the fisherwomen have urged the authorities to take their documents from Shetye and return it to them.  When asked about their money and documents, they stated that, “We want our documents back. Even if our money is not credited to us back, it’s fine by us, but we want our documents to be given back to us.”
