RTI activist known to expose corruption in Sangli found murdered in car in Kolhapur

Times of India: Kolhapur: Friday, 9 Feb 2024.
Santosh Kadam, a 37-year-old Right to Information activist from the Gavbhag area of Sangli city, was found dead with multiple injuries in his car on the Kurundwad-Nandni Road in Shirol tehsil of Kolhapur district, nearly 25km from his house.
Kadam’s wife had registered a missing complaint at the Sangli city police station on Wednesday night. Sanjay More, the inspector at Sangli city police station, said that Kadam had left home after telling his wife that he was going to Kurundwad, but he did not specify the reason for his visit.
A case of murder against unknown person(s) has been registered at the Kurundwad police station of Kolhapur district. Assistant inspector Raviraj Phadnis is investigating officer.
Nikesh Khatmode-Patil, the additional SP of Kolhapur, told TOI: “We found the deceased with many injury marks. There was blood in the car as well. The local residents had spotted the car parked along the road with the body inside. The body has been sent for police mortem. Teams of the local crime branch have been formed to investigate the case and find the accused.”
The police have deployed forensic analysts to get the details from the crime scenes.
Kadam had been an RTI activist for several years. In January 2023, he was attacked by a Sangli corporator, who was arrested along with his brother.
Kadam was the assistant working president of the youth wing of a Lucknow-based RTI body called Suchana Ka Adhikar Karyakarta Association for one year in 2020. According to activists in Sangli, Kadam used RTI to unearth corruption in Sangli Miraj Kupwad Municipal Corporation. He used to post the actions taken after his RTI activism on his social media accounts.
The police suspect the murder might have taken place because of some animosity between him and person(s) affected by his activism.
