Wildlife deptt transferred 200 kanal of land to govt agencies in Jammu: Wajahat Shabir

The Wild Life Department in Jammu division has transferred over 200 Kanal of land to different agencies, a Right to Information (RTI) has revealed.
An application was filed under the Right to Information Act by social activist M. M. Shuja in Regional Wildlife Warden Jammu seeking details of forest land which have been transferred to a government department/central agencies/security forces/police department and others as of 31st August 2023.
The RTI has revealed that nearly 10 kanals of land from Ramnagar Wildlife Sanctuary have been given to the Ministry of Defense, Government of India, by the Director General of Signal, Ministry of Defense, GOI, for laying underground optical fibre cable for the Indian Army
Further, the National Highway Authority of India has secured over 187 kanals of land owned by the Department of Wildlife Protection at two places. The land has been transferred to construct 4 lanning National Highway in Ramnagar and the development of Package 17 of the Delhi-Katra Expressway.
The RTI further stated that nearly 20 kanals of land have been secured by the Government of India under PMGSY for the construction of a road from Mantlai to Gamsadu and again for the construction of a road from Barkunda to Kharwa.
The data reveals that over 13 kanals of land belonging to the Department of Wildlife Protection have either been encroached or are in possession of private or government agencies.
The department in RTI has informed that the encroachment is prior to the notification of the area as a Protection Area. However, the department has taken up the matter with the concerned revenue authorities for settlement of rights so that further course of action can be initiated.
When asked about the total number of casual labourers/need bases working in the Wild Life Department, The Department, in a RTI, replied that 32 numbers of casual labourers/need bases persons working in the division. No such person has been regularized in the department.
The department further informed that the Wild Life Department has planted 11,9864 plants from 2020 to 2023, including 40500 in 2020, 35,344 in 2021, 33,000 in 2022, and 11020 in 2023.
