RTI Initiative Nagaland (RIN) has accused the Election Office, Mokokchung of failing to provide valid reason for deleting names of voters.
In a statement, RTI activists Odi Jamir and ST Yapang Lkr alleged that like many instances in the past, names of 402 voters were deleted under Changtongya jurisdiction without any valid reason from the E-roll published on October 27, 2023.
To ascertain the reason for deletion of voters, the duo said they applied for Inspection under RTI Act, 2005 on December 12 2023. They said DC office Mokokchung received the letter the next day and discussed the date for Inspection either on January 8 or 9, 2024.
On January 9, 2024, the RTI activists said they found the reason for deletion of voters without valid reason and some shortcoming.
The duo said they had found that DC Mokokchung and district election officer (DEO) had received a letter on November 23, 2023 containing cases of 9,737 photo similar entries (PSE) for identification from chief election officer’s office. They pointed out that such cases were to be assigned to the respective BLOs, adding that the BLOs, after verification, sent the report in Garuda App.
Thereafter, the ERO were to take action based on report send by BLOs in Garuda App. They said the ERONet did not allow EROs to make decision until BLOs submitted verification reports.
However, the duo claimed that BLOs under Changtongya jurisdiction said they did not recommend deleting names of 402 voters after PSE verification. Hence, they opined that such case be decided in the court, because such instances of voter(s) deletion without valid reason happened in the past also.
The duo also alleged that there was no such record maintained at the Mokokchung Election Office, and no record of reason for voter deletion. While inquiring in this regard, the office replied that all dates/records were lost while migrating from ERONet 1.0 to ERONet 2.0 on May 10, 2023.
Stating that app can be upgraded often, they however stated that deleting voters’ names without valid reason and all data/record getting lost while migrating to new app was not justifiable. Therefore, the duo affirmed to fighting till the end so that such acts of data/record getting lost were not repeated in the future.
They claimed that Mokokchung Election Office had asked them to share the list of deleted names and assured that they would be included in the voters’ list if they were genuine voters. However, they replied that they could not collect and bring the deleted names for addition each time this was done. The duo declared that they would search for the person who deleted the names, find out the reason and seek justice in the court.
