Builder among three held for firing at RTI activist’s home

Times of India: Mumbai: Saturday, 20 Jan 2024.
A local builder, his accomplice and a contract killer have been arrested for allegedly firing a round at an RTI activist’s house in Virar earlier this week. The builder who suspected the activist of having an affair with his wife, gave a Rs 1 lakh contract to kill him. This was the second contract given by the builder in less than a year to eliminate the activist.
On Monday at around 3.30 am, unknown persons fired through the window of the ground-floor flat of Mobin Shaikh in Ashiana building. The family was asleep when a knock on the main door woke up Shaikh. Even before the knock could be answered, a bullet was fired through the closed window. The bullet hit the showcase inside the house. The prime suspect was a local builder Mastan Shaikh, who was arrested on Thursday. The CCTV images showed two persons outside Mobin’s house. One of them was identified as Mohit Thakur, a contract killer from UP. Thakur was in July last year arrested along with Mastan following a failed attempt to hurl acid at Mobin. The activist had managed to escape the attack on July 10, 2023. He had suspected Mastan to be behind the attack. Mastan when arrested confessed to having given Rs 4 lakh to hurl acid at Mobin. Mastan was later released on bail. Police arrested Mastan’s accomplice Ajay Singh who had helped him get in touch with Thakur. The money was paid to Thakur, who along with an accomplice fired at Mobin’s house. Mobin had unearthed Mastan’s alleged illegal chawl constructions. TNN
