With the Right to Information (RTI) Act completing 13 years on Thursday, activists highlighted that there’s still a long road ahead to make the Act truly effective.
According to the ‘Report Card on the Performance of Information Commissions in India, 2022-23’ by Satark Nagrik Sangathan, Gujarat currently has 4,632 pending appeals and complaints with the state information commission. In terms of these pending cases, the state is ranked 15th among Indian states.Activists estimate that it might take up to eight months for these cases to be resolved. The report also noted that 10 states have pending cases that exceed a year, with West Bengal having the highest estimated waiting time of 24 years. tnn
