Pay ₹10k to cop, says info panel

The Times of India: Chandigarh: Saturday, 15 July 2023.
The Central Information Commission (CIC) has directed the UT police department to pay Rs 10,000 compensation to Jagjeet Singh, head constable of the UT police.
The commission was hearing a show cause notice issued to former UT DSP Rajiv Ambasta for not providing information such as the stock register of consumable and non-consumable items at camp offices of IPS officers.
The commission also appreciated the efforts of the head constable made in larger public interest and directed DGP, UT to ensure implementation of the RTI Act and proper maintenance of records of public money usage and expenditure.
The CIC underlined the need to maintain records in camp offices and sub-division offices of the Chandigarh Police meticulously. Head constable Jagjeet Singh had filed an RTI application seeking information from the stock register of 2017 and 2018 about consumable articles at the camp office of residences of the UT DGP, DIG, SSP, SSP (headquarters) and SSP (security and traffic) for 2017 and 2018 in 2019.
The head constable was not satisfied with the reply of the PIO and filed a first appeal and then a second appeal before the commission. Later, the commission directed the CPIO to offer an inspection of relevant records requested by the head constable.
In his order, the information commissioner observed that in the absence of malafide intention, it would not be appropriate to initiate any action to impose penalty on the CPIO and the show-cause notice issued to former DSP Rajiv Ambasta was dropped.
