Punjab Chief Information Commissioner (PCIC) Mahboob Qadir Shah has directed the inspector general of Punjab police to guarantee the timely provision of information and prevent any harassment of citizens seeking information from the department under the RTI Act, 2013.
The PCIC’s intervention was prompted by an incident involving Naeem Ahmed, of Faisalabad, who had filed a request for information regarding police encounters that occurred in Faisalabad between 2018 and 2022.
Naeem told Dawn that he was summoned in an inappropriate and harassing manner by Faisalabad DSP Legal after submitting his request. Upon receiving the complaint about the DSP’s behaviour, the PCIC instructed the DSP to immediately withdraw the summons and issue a written unconditional apology to the applicant within three days.
The PCIC said that failure to comply would result in necessary action being taken against the DSP under Section 15 of the RTI Act.
