Right to Information goes digital, online portal set up for citizens : G Rajesh Kumar

Mathrubhumi: Kerala: Thursday, 15 June 2023.
In a significant development, the Right to Information (RTI) Act in Kerala has embraced the digital era, with the government information system for citizens moving online in its final stages.
The existing offline method of accessing information will continue to be available alongside the newly established online portal, ensuring a seamless transition. The portal, rtipotal.kerala.gov.in, will soon be fully operational, allowing citizens to apply for information and track the status of their RTI applications. To ensure a smooth transition, Master Trainers from various departments have been introduced to the online system and will subsequently train other officers.
To access the portal's features, applicants are required to create a unique login ID and password upon logging in. The application itself can be submitted through a designated window, either in the form of a paper application or as a composed document that can be printed and uploaded. Upon submission, a nominal fee of Rs.10 is payable through the online window. However, citizens belonging to the Below Poverty Line (BPL) category can apply free of charge, provided they upload the necessary supporting documentation. Once the application is submitted, applicants will receive a response that includes information on any additional fees, if applicable.
Furthermore, provisions will be in place to facilitate applications to the appellate authority. The Information Commissionerate's website will be made online by linking it with the state government's e-office.
