Mapusa ex-chief officer gets Rs 10k fine for failing to furnish info sought under RTI Act

The Goa State Information Commission (GSIC) has levied a penalty of Rs 10,000 on the former Mapusa municipal chief officer, Vyankatesh Sawant, for non-compliance with the Right to Information (RTI) Act and failure to furnish information within the prescribed timeframe.
State Information Commissioner (SIC) Sanjay Dhavalikar delivered the order while hearing an appeal filed by activist Jawaharlal Shetye of Khorlim-Mapusa. After being denied information, Shetye filed first appeal before the First Appellate Authority and being aggrieved, preferred second appeal beforethe Commission.
The SIC had previously concluded that the Public Information Officer (PIO) was guilty of contravening Section 20 of the RTI Act and issued a show cause notice to Sawant regarding the imposition of penalties. During the proceedings, Sawant failed to appear before the SIC or provide any justifications for his actions.
The Commission imposed a penalty of Rs 10,000, to be deducted from the PIO's salary in two equal installments of Rs 5,000 each, starting from June.
The penalty amount will be credited to the government treasury as directed by the Commission.
