Importance of RTI Act discussed ; East Khasi Hills

An interactive session on the Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005 was held at the Department of Law, North-Eastern Hill University, organized under the aegis of the Department of law in collaboration with Pro Bono Associate Club, NEHU.
Chief Information Commissioner (CIC), Central Information Commission, Y.K. Sinha gave an overview of the RTI and highlighted various aspects of the Act and how it has been beneficial for the common people.
He also emphasized on how the Act can be instrumental in making the public authorities accountable and also dwelled on how the Act is being misused by certain section of people, which needs to be curbed.
State Chief Information Commissioner, Heimonlang Nongpluh encouraged students to use the RTI as and when required as this it provides vital rights to access information of public importance.
NEHU Vice Chancellor Prabha Shankar Shukla also addressed the students and emphasized as to why right to information is one of the most valuable rights given to the citizens. He also urged the students to assist people of rural Meghalaya and extend their helping hands to those who are not aware of their basic rights and to be a part of justice delivery system.
The interactive session was attended by government officials, faculties of various departments under the NEHU, research scholars and students of the Department.
