Herald Goa: Panaji: Wednesday, 02 November 2022.
RTI activist Sudip Tamhankar on Tuesday challenged Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to disclose names of eight to nine officers suspended for corruption during his term.
Speaking to reporters, Tamhankar produced copies of information obtained under the Right to Information (RTI) Act since 2012, wherein only two officers suspended that too this year.
He said that then director of Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Sidhivinayak Naik was suspended in the alleged ‘Tur dal’ scam and then Bardez Mamlatdar Rahul Desai was suspended in the alleged land grabbing cases that too after demand.
He said that in the year 2018, a total of 155 complaints were inwarded by people in the Vigilance Department of which 120 complaints were filed and FIR was registered in 11 cases. But there was no single chargesheet and no person was convicted.
The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) conducted only seven raids. In 2019, as many as 130 complaints were inwarded, of which 122 complaints were closed, nine FIRs registered while, there was no chargesheet and only one person was convicted and two raids were conducted.
In 2020, a total of 120 complaints were inwarded and with the inclusion of pending cases 197 were closed. While five FIRs were registered, one chargesheeted and one convicted. Also only one raid was conducted by the department during the year.
In 2021, the department received 123 complaints but 180 complaints were closed and three FIRs were registered. But there was no chargesheet, no conviction and no raids throughout the year.
During the last nine months of the current year, the department received 76 complaints and 100 were closed.
Reacting to Chief Minister’s warning to officers to clear files in time and to take timely decisions, Tamhankar demanded that the Chief Minister should immediately clear the file regarding reservation of seats for OBC students seeking admissions to post-graduation courses, particularly in medicine. The issue of reservation of seats at post-graduation level is pending for the last 10 years, he said adding, “The Chief Minister assured every MLA belonging to OBC communities and various organisations but till date no decision has been taken.”
Tamhankar hoped that the Chief Minister will clear the long pending file during the ongoing Vigilance Week and give relief to the students belonging to OBC students.
