Cops book RTI activist for extortion bid

Times of India: Pune: Saturday, 25 July 2020.
Founder director of Sinhgad Technical Education Society Maruti Navale on Wednesday lodged an FIR with the Deccan Gymkhana police accusing an RTI activist, wanted in three other criminal cases, and the latter’s aide of demanding Rs40 lakh as extortion from him.
A sessions court has already rejected the activist’s anticipatory bail plea in the first case registered by the Kothrud police. A special police squad has since been on his trail. Among others, the police have so far arrested three persons, who allegedly helped the activist escape.
In the FIR, Navale (71) has stated that the activist called him in September 2012 and claimed to be in possession of documents relating to some land at Mulshi. Navale had been in dispute with another party regarding this plot of land. The activist threatened to malign Navale’s image using the documents. He said he wouldn’t do so if he was given Rs1 crore, the FIR stated. Navale allegedly gave the accused cash worth Rs20 lakh and gold worth Rs20 lakh.
