More than 1,200 trees cut for Phase 2 of Namma Metro

The Hindu: Bengaluru: Friday, August 30, 2019.
Half of them were sacrificed for the new line from R.V. Road to Bommasandra
At least 1,253 trees have been axed across Bengaluru to make way for the second phase of Namma Metro, currently under construction. Half of them were sacrificed for the new line from R.V. Road to Bommasandra with 599 trees cut for construction of the 19-km elevated line to Electronics City. The extension of the Purple line from Baiyappanahalli to Whitefield has claimed 276 trees.
The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has shared these details in response to an RTI query. The least number of trees (45) were cut to extend the metro line from Mysuru Road station to Kengeri.
Under Phase 2, BMRCL is building a metro network of 72 km, which includes extension of the Purple and Green lines. Under Phase 2A and 2B, the BMRCL is building a line from Silk Board to K.R. Puram and from K.R. Puram to Kempegowda International Airport (KIA). Many more trees will be axed for further extension of the metro project under Phase 2A and 2B for a stretch of close to 55 km.
Environmentalist Vijay Nishant alleged that BMRCL and the BBMP have been flouting rules while axing trees. “In the last two years, 300 to 400 trees have been cut without following rules,” he alleged.
For Phase I of Namma Metro, the BMRCL had cut 1,428 trees across Bengaluru.
