Twelve gramin
rojgar sevaks were appointed in 12 gram panchayats of Achnera block, Agra
district, between 2008 and 11 in the absence of any government order, an RTI
query has revealed. After learning about it, deputy commissioner, labour
employment, has sought details from block development office (BDO) of Achnera.
The BDO has forwarded the letter to rojgar sevaks to prove that their
appointment is genuine.
A gramin
rojgar sevak (GRS) serves at the ground level in implementing the Mahatma
Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). He conducts physical
verification of development works in a village, documentation work, surveys and
social audits. A GRS in UP gets a monthly honorarium of Rs 6,000.
According to
sources, the appointments were made by officials at the block level. No
district level notification was issued by the district administration. The then
district administration and chief development officer were not informed about
the appointments. In the meantime, several officials were transferred in and
out of the district.
Deputy
commissioner for labour employment Bhupendra Singh said, “The matter surfaced
while preparing a response to an RTI query. Details have been sought from the
BDO. The appointments of rojgar sevaks in Achnera block were made without
orders by the state government. So far, 12 cases have surfaced. The number may
