Recently the
32nd organ donation was done in the city when life-saving organs of a diamond
factory worker Suresh Panchal, (46) was donated by his family after he suffered
a brain stroke and was declared brain dead on August 15. According to Panchal's
wish, his son consented to donating his heart, liver and two kidneys for the
needy patients to save their life.
Citizens have
slowly started opting for life-saving organ donation of their relatives who are
declared brain-dead by the doctor. While the government body is working on
creating awareness to donate a life-saving organ, the number of patients
waiting for organs is much higher than the donated organs.
In
Maharashtra, this year the waiting list for the kidney is 4,666, while the
waiting list for the liver is 789. Similarly, the waiting list for the heart is
43 and the lung is nine.
As per the
Right To Information (RTI) response given by ROTTO-SOTTO till the month of
July, this year, in Maharashtra, around 19 heart, 108 kidney, one lung and 64
liver has been transplanted out of which organ transplant of 49 kidneys, 26
liver, 14 heart and one lung was done in Mumbai. Later in the month of August,
four liver, one heart transplant happened in Mumbai.
Speaking
about the awareness in the public, Sujata Aashetkar, member of Zonal Transplant
Co-ordination Center (ZTCC), Mumbai, said, "There has been a slight
increase in the number of people opting for life-saving organ of a family
member who has been declared brains stem death (BSD). A lot of organizations
and institutes like community centers, colleges, schools, trust, hospitals come
forward willingly to organize organ donation workshop for their members."
This year,
Mumbai's first lung transplant happened in the month of June when 13-year-old
Kurla resident's family donated her heart, lung, kidneys, and liver after she
was declared brain dead by the doctors at Kohinoor Hospital. Last year too
there was one lung transplant done in the city.

ROTTO-SOTTO’s RTI reply, till July 2018, 19 hearts, 108 kidneys, 1 lung &
64 livers were transplanted in Maha out of which 49 kidneys, 26 liver, 14
hearts and 1 lung were transplanted in city.
