At least 30%
of sanctioned posts of teachers are lying vacant in government degree colleges
in the state, while 416 positions have been filled up by guest lecturers,
evening teachers and contractual workers, an RTI query has revealed. The RTI
reply also revealed that state government degree colleges had no teachers for
MBA, tourism, basic science, philosophy, army science, basic humanities,
anthropology and Bachelor of Tourism Studies.
Of 2,198
sanctioned positions of teachers in 100 government degree colleges of the hill
state, 1,075 are without permanent teachers. Of these, 659 are vacant, 51 posts
have contractual teachers on them, 306 have been filled in by guest teachers
and 59 by evening teachers.
Of 100
positions of principals in government degree colleges three are lying vacant,
according to the reply to an RTI query filed by Nademuddin, a Kashipur-based
activist.
“The reply
given by the higher education department has revealed that positions are vacant
for key subjects such as physics, mathematics, history, geology etc,”
Nademuddin said.
Savita Mohan,
director in charge, higher education, said, “We are working towards filling up
the vacancies. We are also attaching teachers to various colleges as visiting
lecturers.”
According to
the RTI reply, seven teaching posts against the nine sanctioned positions are
lying vacant for Bachelor in Computer Application (BCA). In BSc (Home Science),
two positions are vacant against the three sanctioned posts while five posts
against the eight sanctioned are lying vacant in drawing. Geology has eight
vacant positions against 14 sanctioned, English has 64 vacant positions against
147 sanctioned, Mathematics has 44 vacant positions against 106 positions
sanctioned, Education has 16 vacant positions against 40 sanctioned, Sanskrit
has 31 vacant positions against 78 sanctioned, Physics has 47 vacant positions
against 120 sanctioned positions, Bachelor in education and Masters in
Education combined have 19 vacant positions against 50 sanctioned ones.
Among other
subjects, ,music has six vacant positions against 18 sanctioned ones, computer
science has one position vacant against three sanctioned, botany has 39
positions vacant against 118 sanctioned posts, political science has 55 vacant
positions against sanctioned 170 posts, economics has 44 vacant positions
against sanctioned 136, commerce has 48 vacant positions against sanctioned
151, zoology has 35 vacant positions against sanctioned 114, home science has
12 vacancies against 41 sanctioned posts, chemistry has 38 vacant positions
against 135 sanctioned posts, Hindi has 52 vacant positions against 185
sanctioned, sociology has 33 vacant positions against 128 sanctioned,
statistics has one vacant position against four sanctioned, physical education
has two vacancies against 10 sanctioned positions, BBA has one vacant position
against five sanctioned, history has 19 vacant positions against 121 sanctioned
positions, geography has 15 vacant positions against sanctioned 113, law has
one vacant position against sanctioned eight and psychology has three vacant
positions against 28 sanctioned posts.
