The Hindu: Madurai: Saturday, January 06, 2018.
A reply
received from Madurai Corporation on a request made through the Right to
Information (RTI) Act has revealed that the city had inadequate number of free
public toilets in the city.
K. Hakkim,
the activist, who filed the query under the RTI Act, said that though the city
had 341 free-to-use toilets with 1,372 seats, a majority of them were
concentrated in a few areas, particularly near places with floating population
like Mattuthavani and Periyar bus stands, and Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple.
“For
instance, the RTI reply said that 40 toilets were present in ward 44 that has
Mattuthavani bus stand,” he said.
He also
pointed out that 47 of the 100 wards in Madurai Corporation did not have a
single free-to-use public toilet. Pointing out that boards stating that the
toilets were free-to-use have not been put up in majority of these toilets, he
said that this had led to some of these toilets charging money from the public.
He said that
since Madurai Corporation was showing an increased focus on making the city
free from open defecation, they must prioritise construction and maintenance of
public toilets in all the wards.
