Sending a
strong message to defaulters, state information commissioner Hafiz Usman
slapped a penalty totalling Rs 6 lakh on more than 27 information officers of
five districts for a delay or faulty dissemination of information to RTI
queries.
Usman who in
Bijnor for three days and personally looked into the pending RTI queries of
eight districts, including Bijnor, Muzaffarnagar and Shamli.
He heard
complaints related to Right to Information (RTI) and sorted out around 162
complaints of eight districts. Around 27 officers were found erring for not
sorting out the complaints on time.
Addressing a
meeting, Usman raised concern over the apathy of the officials towards RTI Act,
2005. He said, "RTI is a weapon which can root out corruption from the
government offices. But officials are not providing information to the
applicants on time. This attitude cannot be tolerated.He instructed
the officials to provide information to the applicants within 30 days so that
applicants get right information within a specified time span.
