Manch demands action against officials for poor right to information response

Times of India: Pune: Sunday, December 04, 2016.
Nagrik Chetna Manch, a citizens' organisation, has demanded action against officials of the Pune Municipal Corporation for delaying and giving incomplete and inaccurate information under the Right to Information Act. The matter pertains to leasing out of civic properties and the rent recovered.
Qaneez Sukhrani, a member of the group, claimed that the civic officials took almost four months to give the information she had sought. And when it finally came, the information was incomplete. For a detailed information, she was asked to visit the PMC's website which was under construction.
"The civic body officials need to pull up their socks and be more accountable and responsible where public money is concerned. For failure and delay in collecting rental dues, the officials concerned should be issued show cause notices and suspended," she said.
Sukhrani claimed that going by the delay in getting a reply to her query, it is quite evident that the PMC's land and estate department had tried cover up irregularities and deficiencies in collecting rent of leased properties.
"For more information, I was asked to check the PMC's website as per section 4 of the RTI Act 2005, but on visiting the site, it was found to be under construction," she said. Such figures should be readily available, especially if the financial transactions were closed for the year, she added.
Sukhrani said the information given by the department does not clarify on the doubts the Manch had regarding an amount of Rs 13 crore which was yet to be recovered from the people who had taken the properties on rent.
Ravi Khandhare, public information officer, PMC, who provided the data, said, "We get the information from the departments which is then given to applicants. If there is any query about figures, the officials of the department should be approached."
