The Bombay
high court (HC) on Thursday asked MTDC to check if a firm contracted to train
89 lifeguards was properly accredited. Hearing a PIL filed by Janhit Manch for
safety on beaches, a division bench of the court sought a report within a
month.
The court
said that if the firm did not have requisite qualification, the lifeguards must
be trained again. The HC told the state to comply with its directive to
implement measures to make beaches safe.
The court was
told that, as per details got under the RTI Act, the firm's accreditation was
only till 2012. Government pleader Abhinandan Vagyani said the state would seek
help from National Institute of Water Sports, Goa, Indian Navy or Coast Guard
to train the lifeguards.
The PIL
sought implementation of a 2006 government resolution to adopt safety norms at
state beaches. Shibu Thomas.
