Police commissioner cracks whip on ACPs, inspectors

Times of India‎‎‎‎‎‎‎: Ahmedabad: Tuesday, September 20, 2016.
City police commissioner Shivanand Jha has sent a notification to all assistant commissioner of police (ACP) level officers dated September 14 outlining 52 points to keep in mind while performing their duties. In another notification, dated September 16, the commissioner has defined the duties to be performed by senior and junior police inspectors at police stations.
Sources said that in the recent past the city witnessed a sudden spike in violent crimes and incidents of public unrest. The notifications would make it easier for law enforcers to address such issues.
The notification for the ACPs mentions they would be responsible for crimes in their divisions. They would have to supervise serious offences, investigate at least six offences, probe cases where children remain missing beyond two months, keep an eye on entries in eGujCop and ensure filing of RTI replies in time. They have also been asked to visit police stations under their jurisdiction weekly and check case disposals during surprise visits.
"All mentioned duties have been described in Gujarat Police Manual and various notifications by the state government over the years. However, with this notification, the responsibilities have been made more formal," said an official.
In the second notification, the senior inspector of a police station has been made responsible for all administrative work, supervision of personnel, giving opinion for furlough and licences, visit and inspection of police chowkies and preventive action. The junior inspector would be responsible for prohibition, accidental deaths, arms and ammunition supervision, maintenance of records, police welfare, criminal profile and tracking, seeking report on pending inquiries and probe and land-related applications.
