The MCG has ordered a strict action against 41 illegal banquet and marriage halls in the city. Of these 41 structures, 36 are situated in the restricted 900-metre Indian Air Force (IAF) zone, and are likely to be sealed soon.
According to a senior official of the civic body's planning wing, there are 63 banquet halls, marriage halls and party lawns in the city's four zones. And only one of these properties has obtained the licence so far even though the state government had framed a policy in 2014 to regularise such commercial properties, which were running without licences.
He said most of these banquet halls were issued notices. However, since the owners of these properties have not responded, the MCG has decided to crack down on them.
Earlier, an RTI application filed by a city-based activist had received a reply from the MCG, saying as many as 25 banquet halls were served notices in the past. The MCG, sources said, had sought responses from them on why licences were not obtained. The corporation said running banquet halls illegally could attract strict action under the Haryana Municipal Corporation Act 1994. Most of these halls are located on Sohna Road, Pataudi Road, Badshahpur, Daulatabad and Rajendra Park. The status of the rest, according to the MCG reply, was "unknown".
It has been alleged that a nexus of MCG officials and businessmen has a role in running these illegal banquet halls. The nexus has caused a loss of millions of rupees to the government, said the activist. For running a banquet hall, a trade licence and a no-objection certificate must be obtained from the MCG and the fire department.
