The city
police have sanctioned rewards of over Rs 3 lakh to 1,039 police personnel for
good work in the department for last year.
The number of
recipients is the highest in the last four years as per the information
procured from an RTI query.
As per the
data obtained, 3,495 policemen have been rewarded Rs1,38,405 over the last four
years.
Vijay Patil,
deputy commissioner of police (headquarters/traffic), said that rewards are
given to policemen for various reasons. "Rewards can be given to personnel
from the ranks of a constable to an inspector by senior officers of the ranks
assistant commissioner of police, deputy commissioner of police and the
commissioner," Patil said, adding that the personnel are awarded for
commendable work during investigation cases.
"During
the Kumbh Mela last year, a policeman was rewarded for saving life of a person
who was trying to commit suicide. Such policemen who show act of courage also
become eligible for the reward," he added.
The amount
sanctioned for rewards may vary as per the rank of the officer. "The
amount of rewards can range from Rs 100 up to Rs 2,000 depending on the
officer's rank. The rewards are sanctioned through funds allocated for the
purpose," Patil added.
The DCP said
that once the officer recommends the award to be disbursed, a collective bill
is sent to the higher authority for sanctioning the mentioned amount. Once
sanctioned, the funds are transferred to the police station concerned through
the accounts section, which then transfers the reward money into the account of
the rewardee.
