Police’s vigilance branch has registered only eight cases of corruption and
arrested six police officials on the basis of information received through its
anti-corruption helpline, according to an RTI reply. The branch had spent
around Rs 11.77 crore for advertisement over 20 months starting April 1, 2014.
While Rs 1.12
crore was spent on advertisements published on newspapers in the period between
April 1, 2014 and November 24, 2015, Rs 10.65 crore was spent on radio
advertisements during the same period. The eight cases were registered under
Prevention of Corruption Act and the six police personnel were arrested in
connection with cases that took place between March 2014 and May 2016, said the
reply provided to a RTI query by activist Sudhir Yadav.
When asked
about how the amount spent on advertisement corelated with the action taken, a
senior police official said, “It can also be seen as a reduction in corruption
in the force because extensive advertising created a fear and persuaded people
against indulging in such acts.”
According to
the Delhi police data, 490 police personnel were placed under suspension for
various offences and 682 departmental enquiries were initiated by the vigilance
department in 2015.
